Defining Food Insecurity

Health Affairs (2022) notes food insecurity is defined by the US Department of Agriculture as a lack of consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy lifestyle. This profoundly impacts college students, a population whose food insecurity issues are largely under-recognized, under-examined, and under-addressed.

Food-insecure students are:

  • more likely to fall into a lower GPA category compared to their food-secure counterparts
  • less likely to excel in class
  • have lower attendance and completion rates
  • are more likely to report indicators of stress and depression
